The Common Grass Yellow butterfly, a cheerful sight in gardens, open grasslands, and scrub habitats across Africa, Asia, and Australia, is a true marvel of nature. These brightly colored butterflies exhibit a fascinating phenomenon known as seasonal polyphenism. This means their appearance transforms based on environmental and hormonal cues during their caterpillar or pupal stages. During the summer, when daylight stretches beyond 13 hours, these butterflies emerge with darker, broader black wing markings. This vivid pigmentation helps them absorb more heat, ensuring they remain active in the warm season. However, in the dry winter months, their colors become paler, with less intense markings. They develop brown speckles on the undersides of their wings, providing perfect camouflage against the backdrop of withered vegetation.
