The Adonis Blue butterfly is native to the Palearctic realm, including most of Europe, Iraq, Iran and Turkey. This butterfly is best known for the bright blue color that is found only in the males of this species. The females are chocolate brown in color and much less noticeable among the vegetation and grass. This species spends the winter months as a caterpillar. They can be found mostly among their host plant the Horseshoe Vetch and snack away during the day. from April-May and July-August they form into a chrysalis. The most interesting fact is they do this instead of crevices or hollows and are then buries by ants in earth chambers connect to the ant nest. The ants act as its protectors for three weeks before it emerges as a butterfly!
The Adonis Blue Butterfly is an original artwork measuring approximately 5 x 5.75". Each vintage inspired artwork starts among the sketchbook pages, literred with hand written notes and research that dive into the mytology, meaning, and stories of each of her subjects. From the sketch phase each artwork is transferred onto hot press watercolor paper to begin the stages of her process. Light layers of graphite and watercolor are then layered to create the vintage feeling that is seen. Erica Catherine dreams of her art being cherish for many years, ideally becoming heirlooms passed through generations.
